Young enjoying the ride in Qualifying Series
THE past week has offered a massive boost for Yamba pro surfer Jeames Young.
He won his first heat of the year in round one of the Great Lakes Pro, and although he bowed out in the third round came home to solid 1.3-1.6m waves at Angourie Point.
This week he’s also been filming an episode with 4WD Touring Australia, showing the crew around the Clarence Valley and trying four-wheel-driving for the first time.
It’s a bit of a change of pace after the flurry of QS events along the NSW coast in the past month, and Young said while he was a bit disappointed with the way his campaign has started this year, there was still plenty to do.
“I felt like its been a really bad start to the year for me but it’s not one of those things where I feel like I’m surfing bad,” he said.
“It’s just confidence that makes everything happen and I feel like when I’m home or before a contest everything’s really good. It just one of those things.”
He said the calibre and sheer number of other pro surfers at this year’s QS events was eye-opening.
“It’s really surprising because we’ve just come off pro juniors and it’s really different,” he said.
“You meet so many new people and they also push your surfing. It’s pretty good to live and learn off those type of guys.”
