Young guns star on the netball court

GRAFTON High School's URB team emerged victorious from a highly anticipated Grafton A Grade netball match with the young guns of Rhino Storm at the weekend.

Both teams started strongly, although it was apparent from the beginning that top-of-the-ladder GHS URB held a slight advantage but Storm were not about to give up without a fight.

Rhino Storm's Crystal Hastings and Kim Blinman were accurate in the shooting circle, although URB's goal defence Elloise Casson goal keeper Sam Donavan took many intercepts and quickly sent the ball back to the other end.

By the end of the first quarter, with accurate shooting by Charlie Donavan and Tamara McSkimming, URB led 9-5.

The Rhinos worked hard on a comeback during the second quarter with some great ball work in the goal circle by shooter Ashleigh McLennan and Blinman.

Kate Gordon came in as centre for Rhino Storm and took some great intercepts, but in the end the shooting machine of McSkimming and Donavan ensured URB held a commanding 19-11 lead by half-time.

During the game, Rhino's struggled with their shooting accuracy and had many attempts before the ball found the hoop.

The URB's defence in the goal area by Casson and Donavan was outstanding as they worked vigorously to ensure the Rhinos shots were kept to a minimum.

The URB attacking team were regularly challenged by the elevation and long grasp of Rhino Amee McGrath and she was instrumental in keeping the Rhinos in touch with URB, 31-15 by the end of the third quarter.

In the last quarter, Rhinos Emily Durrington came into the centre position and worked well with Lauren Hastings to keep the ball moving to their shooting end.

URB's Kate Synott was moved in the goal keeper position to replace Sam, which was a great tactic and kept the Rhino shots to a minimum.

In the end the massive lead attained by URB was too great for the Rhinos to draw in, with experience winning out on the day and URB winning 39-20.

Other results for A grade: City Dex 37 defeated Rhino Whipets 27, City Smyths 40 defeated Rhino Strongbow 20, Tucabia Opals 30 defeated Rhino Ivories 13.
