Young guns to fire at indoor championships
HOCKEY: Grafton duo Zac and Grace Young will take on their biggest challenge on the indoor hockey field this weekend as they line up for Boys and Girls NSW Under 15s teams at the Indoor Australian Championships in Wollongong this weekend.
Coming off the back of silver medals with their respective outdoor teams earlier in the year, the pair are hoping to do one better and claim gold for their state.
"Pretty good, we've got a pretty good chance of taking out the gold but it just depends on if we step up and perform or not on the day,” Zac said.
"I think it helps having most of the same players from the outdoor team playing together indoor as well, because everyone knows each other so we can communicate a lot better.”
The task for the U15s Boys squad is made more difficult after a few late withdrawals by regular members of the squad.
"We will have a few shadows in our side so everyone will have to step up,” Zac said.
"It will makes things a little tougher for our team to have a couple of players who haven't been a part of that same group, but we will try and help them and communicate as best as possible.”
The outdoor and indoor competitions are two different sports, and Grace said it's a challenge to adapt between the two.
"We don't have an indoor competition or anything in Grafton, so it's hard to get game time,” she said.
"Also the field is different in Wollongong, the surface is different to what we have here, so it's a bit hard.
Despite a lack of opportunities to hone their indoor skills compared to their metropolitan counterparts, the pair were confident they could make the most of their opportunities.
"We're going to have to really play as a team and communicate well,” Grace said.
"With indoor you really need to know where everyone is.”
