Young rugby reps tested in the heat

THE heat was unbearable and the humidity was taxing, but not even the oppressive conditions could stop the Far North Coast zone under-15 rugby union squad from preparing for the NSW Country Championships last weekend.

Junior rugby union players from Grafton to Brunswick Heads sweated and toiled at a training day on the Angourie Sports Field under the watchful eye of coach Don Darke.

“The squad was picked after trials and a development camp late last year,” Darke said.

“These guys are the best junior players the zone has to offer.”

The squad will continue its preparation for the Country Championships, to be held in Moree beginning May 9, with several more training camps and trial games.

“We went very well last year and six of the squad was chosen for NSW country first 15,” Darke said.

“I expect this side to go one better.”
