Young talent takes rockiest road
THRILLS, chills, laughs and a whole lot of foot-tappin' fun - expect all this and more during the Grafton Criterion Theatre's latest production of the Rocky Monster Show which opens tomorrow night.
"It's a rock and roll fantasy designed to be performed by young people under the age of 21," director Dave Mackey said.
"Basically it's about a mad professor who used to be a rock star who has worked out how to recreate his band from the 1960s and is performing for a local village full of idiots."
Dave said the show was full of colourful characters, a quirky, funny plot and plenty of great songs (performed by a five-piece band) to get the audience grooving.
The show is also thought to be one of the only (if not the first) Criterion Theatre production to feature an all-youth cast - however Dave said the young actors - all aged between 12 and 16 - had risen to the challenge admirably.
"It isn't a school play, it's a play for the wider community and for a lot of them it'll be the first time they've ever performed for the wider community," he said.
"So it was a bit daunting for them because they're going to face a public audience that isn't comprised of just their parents.
"But they've been great - they've been very enthusiastic, they came in to rehearse during the school holidays three days a week, that's how keen they've been and it really shows."
Dave said youth was a key theme of the production and said he hoped the Rocky Monster Show would reveal just how much talent there was among the younger residents of the Clarence Valley.
"What we're hoping the audience will take away is the feeling that the young people in this town are very talented and if given the opportunity to show that talent, they'll rise to the occasion," he said.
The Rocky Monster Show opens at Grafton's Criterion Theatre tomorrow night.
