Your spring clean need not be mean

DE-CLUTTERING means getting rid of unwanted items that are taking up valuable space. While many agree we are holding on to more than we need, if you set a goal of doing a purge, you're likely to get overwhelmed and fail.

Instead, be realistic, and strategically organise the things you value most in an efficient and useful way. The goal of organising is to know exactly what you own and where you can find it, regardless of how much stuff you have.

Closets are a common source of clutter. Most of us have heard the directive to purge everything that has not been worn in the past year, but that can be a horrifying thought for those of us who attach sentimentality to our clothes. Much more can be accomplished by organising rather than discarding.

Start by hanging everything on the same type of hangers - quality wooden ones preferably. You can then start arranging everything in a logical order, such as hanging all your shirts together, facing the same way.

Do the same with dresses, though you may want to split these up by seasons, such as summer strappy dresses to winter dresses with sleeves. Again, the goal here is to be able to find items easily. Then move on to all other clothing that requires folding. Sort these by type, such as jeans together and jeans and sweaters together, all folded neatly.

This process of organising spaces in use daily can happen without the dreaded de-cluttering, and it should happen a couple of times a year.
