Youth winners in Yamba competition

WHAT a wonderful night of outstanding youth was witnessed when Yamba Lions Club held their Youth of the Year Club Final Saturday October 29 at Yamba Bowling Club when two students, Crystal Piper - captain and Nicole Cowling - vice captain from Maclean High School competed against Nicholas Power-Geary and Braden Lewis from McAuley Catholic College.

Their impromptu questions "What Makes You Smile" and "What Do You Have That You Cannot Live Without", were answered very confidently by all four and the prepared speeches were well composed and delivered with aplomb. The judges, Jan Coleman - president of Yamba Yabbies Toastmasters, a member of Leaders By Design an Advanced Toastmasters Club and Division Director of Div 90 Toastmasters which stretches from Queensland Border to Forster. Jacqui Hinshaw is a librarian at Iluka, has a Masters of Education.

Also very interested in the Youth of our area. Lesa Bevan is the new Principal at Harwood Island Primary School coming from the Riverina Area where she was principal for six years at Carrothool Public School. These ladies worked most of the day into the night to judge the four students which are a credit to their families and schools. We thank them all for their participation and all who attended to support the night.

Thanks to Lions Joy Lauder as Chairman, Deyann McDonnell (with granddaughter Jess) and Stella Jackson as Timers with Peter Ross and Chris Fox as Sergeant at Arms. The students were supported by parents and friends plus some Yamba Lions Club members. Maclean High School Deputy Principal Tania Kane was in attendance together with an interested couple from Ashby, Terry and Joylene Muller.

Crystal Piper was the overall winner and Braden Lewis the public speaking winner.
